The rules
The rules the lantern keeps.
They hold on both sides, for every lantern and every lens.
The six rules
Nothing leaves without a yes.
The Wick can suggest. Only the person sends, weekly lanterns included, and a lamplighter joins a chat only when let in.
Each app keeps its own.
The person’s record stays in The Wick, and the lamplighter’s notes stay in Lamplighter. Everything that crosses goes through the lantern.
You can see when they’re involved.
The lamplight bar shows whenever a lamplighter is part of what’s on screen.
Everything added says who set it.
A lens, or anything sent in, shows who set it, appears in the receipt of any answer it shapes, and can be paused or removed.
A joined chat uses only what was shared.
With a lamplighter in the room, The Wick answers from what the person chose to share. The rest of their record stays out.
Urgent isn’t an emergency line.
Every urgent lantern says the lamplighter isn’t on call, with a crisis line beside it.
Ines sees urgent lanterns first. She isn’t on call. If you’re in danger, call or text 988 in the US, or your local emergency number.
Three marks. Same meaning everywhere.
The lantern keeps every word verbatim and puts a receipt on every answer, in both apps. What a lantern carries keeps its marks, so a lamplighter reads it the way the person does. A sourced line looks sourced. A guess looks like a guess.
In The Wick, as R. sees it
I’m going to give him the dates first and leave the rest for the drive.
That’s what you decided on 12 August. Your messages from 3 to 19 July are set aside, with your yes, and a summary that cites all 44 is in their place.
You said the last visit ended early.
This isn’t from your record. Treat it as my guess.
In Lamplighter, as you read it

The same words and the same marks, in either room. Invented example, shown as designed.
Traced to their record: their words, and the date they said them.
Out of view with their yes, and named. A summary that cites every message takes its place.
Nothing in their record backs it. It’s marked in the text, never hidden. Read it as a guess.
What it isn’t.
Not a window into anyone’s record.
Nothing crosses unless the person sends it, or shares it in a chat they let someone into.
Not monitoring.
Nothing reaches a lamplighter unless the person sends it, or turns on sending their weekly lantern.
Not therapy, not a clinician.
Neither app is, and no lens makes it one.
Not open yet.
The Wick, Lamplighter and the lantern are all in development. We won’t give a date until we can keep it.
One boundary, stated plainly.
The Wick keeps the person’s record on their device, and Lamplighter keeps the lamplighter’s notes on theirs, each under a key its owner holds. A lantern is designed to be signed and encrypted for the one person it’s for. When either app answers a question, whichever model answers sees what it’s working from in the clear. The encryption gets an independent review before anything opens.
